Harman Ready Together

Harman had a vision for communication in a car setting.  Using high tech sensors, microphones, and servos, they created virtual audio/video environments for every passenger in a Lincoln Navigator.  900lbs brought Emmar onto the project as director.  

After extensive preparation, it became apparent that the vehicle necessary only existed in Detroit.  I strapped in all the gear I could imagine.  I wasn't used to shoots outside of Dallas.  I brought my camera and lenses, I dumped my sandbags and brought them to refill in Detroit, my sound gear, and packed it all in a suitcase.  

This was in January of 2022.  When we arrived, we found Harman's high tech lab with multiple vehicles, and all kinds of R&D projects.  A light dusting of snow covered the world around us.  Our actors were a family of performers.  The mother, two children, and their grandmother all created the feeling of a family on a drive in the new technological age.

The Film

Concept

On this production, we shot with the only vehicle in the world with this equipment installed.  We

shot with blank screens, capturing the reflections.  Emmar created the graphics and Justin Foshee helped composite the screens onto the interiors of the vehicle.

One challenge that presented itself is that the two child actresses were too short for the robotic headrests.  Emmar rotoscoped them using AI, and created new environments.  This went along with some rotoscoping and clean ups to remove the camera assistant from the back seat of the vehicle.  

All of this comes together to demonstrate a fully integrated in vehicle experience.

Process

For pre-production Emmar began by taking a voice over script and developing a screenplay with visuals.  His storyboards are shown below.  This was Emmar's first time using 3D storyboards, and he found the process to be fast and accurate.  He used Matt Workman's Cinetracer application.  

On set, Emmar kept a notebook with all of these storyboards arranged in order of set up.  This gave speed to the production.  With the children on set, only six hours could be used for photography per day.  The shoot was two days.  On day one, they shot in the Lincoln Navigator with all of the electronic equipment.  On day two, they shot using the rental vehicle as the opening segment SUV.
