As part of the 500X Member's Show, Emmar Grant's The Triumph of Flies is inspired by the 1562 painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Triumph of Death, and Johann Georg Leinberger's Death Blowing Bubbles. Death and plague are depicted as skeletal figures, and 2021 is a plague year. The works depict the casual humor that serves as the only way to give us. distance to look at the horror of this event, the decay of society, and the rotting of bodies. The inclusion of Christmas trees connects us with the way the virus strengthened and killed more people during the holiday season, leaving behind traumas associated with the icons of the holiday.
The melting faces were created the way old movies would create wax heads and melt them with a heat gun.
This piece was on display during a Halloween party in 2021, created by Emmar Grant.
